About

Master the complete road design workflow using Autodesk Civil 3D in this intensive 6-week live online course designed specifically for engineers working on highway and road projects in Ghana and across Africa.

Through hands-on live sessions every Saturday and Sunday afternoon, you’ll learn how to efficiently create highway alignments, design vertical profiles, build dynamic corridor models, and produce complete construction documents.

Each 2-hour live session includes real-world project examples based on actual highway projects, live demonstrations, Q&A time, and practical exercises. All sessions are recorded so you can review them anytime.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to confidently handle complete road design projects from survey data to final construction drawings, significantly improving your efficiency and the quality of your deliverables.

What You'll Learn

  • + Design complete highway alignments from survey data to final construction plans
  • + Build dynamic corridor models with multiple lane configurations
  • + Master superelevation and complex intersection design techniques
  • + Create and manage surfaces for existing and proposed road designs
  • + Generate professional construction drawings and earthwork quantities
  • + Apply Ghana Highway Authority standards and best practices

Curriculum

1

Mastering Project Setup & Survey Data Management

Apr 11, 2026 • 2:00 PM 60 min 5 Resources
Completed

An introduction to the Civil 3D environment and establishing a strong foundation for the road project. Students will learn how to set up project templates, assign coordinate systems, and properly import, group, and manage raw survey point data.

2

Modeling the Existing Ground Terrain

Apr 12, 2026 • 2:00 PM 60 min 1 Resources
Completed

Transforming survey data into a workable 3D terrain model. This session covers generating TIN surfaces, defining boundaries, incorporating breaklines, and running surface analyses (like elevation and slope banding) to understand the existing topography.

3

Designing Horizontal Alignments & Superelevation

Apr 18, 2026 • 2:00 PM 60 min
Upcoming

Establishing the road's footprint. We will design the horizontal alignment using tangents, curves, and spirals based on specific design criteria. The session concludes with calculating and applying superelevation to accommodate design speeds through curves.

4

Designing Vertical Profiles

Apr 19, 2026 • 2:00 PM 60 min
Upcoming

Translating the horizontal design into the vertical plane. We will sample the existing ground to create a surface profile, then design the finished grade profile using vertical tangents and curves while balancing cut and fill visually.

5

Building Assemblies & Typical Cross-Sections

Apr 25, 2026 • 2:00 PM 60 min
Upcoming

Building the typical cross-section of the road. We will explore the tool palettes to select and modify subassemblies (lanes, shoulders, curbs, and daylighting), snapping them together to create robust assemblies for different road conditions.

6

Building Dynamic Corridor Models

Apr 26, 2026 • 2:00 PM 60 min
Upcoming

Bringing the 3D road model to life. This session merges the alignment, profile, and assembly into a dynamic corridor. Students will learn how to set up baselines, define regions, and establish horizontal and vertical targets.

7

Tackling Intersection Design

May 2, 2026 • 2:00 PM 60 min
Upcoming

Tackling one of the most complex aspects of road design. Students will learn how to model junctions, manage multiple intersecting baselines, generate curb returns, and tie the intersection smoothly into the primary corridor.

Enroll in this course to access this session and resources.

8

Integrating Road Drainage & Pipe Networks

May 3, 2026 • 2:00 PM 60 min
Upcoming

Implementing gravity-based drainage systems. This session covers the creation of pipe networks, placing catch basins and manholes along the corridor, laying out connecting pipes, and viewing the network within the profile view.

9

Analyzing Earthwork Volumes & Surfaces

May 9, 2026 • 2:00 PM 60 min
Upcoming

Extracting actionable data from the model. We will generate a top and datum surface directly from the corridor, create sample lines, compute earthwork materials (cut/fill), and generate volume reports to evaluate project feasibility.

10

Automating Plan & Profile Production

May 10, 2026 • 2:00 PM 60 min
Upcoming

Automating the drafting process. Students will use the plan production tools to generate view frames along the alignment and automatically create standardized plan and profile sheets with accurate match lines.

11

Generating Detailed Cross Section Sheets

May 10, 2026 • 2:00 PM 60 min
Upcoming

Completing the construction drawing set. This session focuses on generating multiple cross-section views, placing them onto sheets, adding dynamic labels, and preparing the final digital deliverables for plotting and sharing.

12

Course Wrap-up & Workflow Best Practices

May 16, 2026 • 2:00 PM 60 min
Upcoming

A comprehensive review of the entire workflow. This open-floor session is dedicated to troubleshooting specific student models, answering advanced Q&A, and summarizing best practices for efficient road design in Civil 3D.
